James Durward Wright, 80, of Williamsburg

James Durward Wright (Nelsen Funeral Home)

James Durward Wright was born on July 15, 1945, to Horace and Gladys Wright, in Birmingham, Alabama.

After graduating from Hewitt-Trussville High school, he continued his studies at night school at Jefferson State Junior College, then received his bachelor’s in business from University of Alabama in Birmingham.

After joining the Air Force in 1968, he was stationed in Key West, Florida. Receiving accolades as a Staff Sergeant, he spent his days training and delegating to new recruits.

He was honorably discharged in 1971, and moved back home to Birmingham, and went to work at Southern Cement.

Married in February of 1972, he went on to serve as a deacon for Ridgecrest Baptist Church, and was a prominent member of the choir.

Moving in between Alabama and Georgia for a new career position as a credit manager for Noland company, he eventually settled in Williamsburg, VA in 1996.

He retired from Carrier Midatlantic in 2015 and spent his days reading and lounging with the dogs, Bama and Buddy.

Ever an outdoorsman, he enjoyed camping and fishing with friends and family.

When he wasn’t behind the camera, he was helping to maintain the home and needs of his loved ones. If it was broken, he could fix it. And if he couldn’t, he would learn.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy Moss Wright, and their children and grandchildren: Jessica Wright Smith, married to Robin Alexander Smith, children Zora Dove Smith and Henry Ward Smith; David Evan Wright, married to Rachel Elisabeth Boucher.

The family wishes to acknowledge the heartfelt care given by the staff of Dominion Village in Williamsburg and ACG Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, please send thoughts and donations to Christ Fellowship Church on Ironbound Road in Williamsburg, VA.
