Matthew S. Nazzaro, 53, of Newport News

Matthew S. Nazzaro (Weymouth Funeral Home & Crematory)

Matthew S. Nazzaro, 53, beloved son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away on July 26, 2025. He was born in Fairfax, Virginia, and spent most of his youth in Newport News, where he grew up alongside his sister Luisa and graduated from Menchville High School.

Matthew went on to study at Virginia Tech and later at ECPI, where he pursued his interest in technology. He briefly lived in Charlottesville before returning to the Hampton Roads area, where he built a successful career in IT, working for companies such as Symantec, Perfect Commerce, and most recently, Ferguson Enterprises.

Those who knew Matthew will remember him for his generous spirit, gentle demeanor, and unwavering willingness to help others. He was the kind of person you could always count on—whether you needed a ride, help fixing something, or someone to watch your pets while you were away. He cared deeply for his family and was a devoted son, especially to his mother, Yongcha Ayers, with whom he shared a close bond.

Matthew found joy in the natural world and loved spending time outdoors. He was a certified scuba diver, archer, and enjoyed camping and fishing. But his greatest passion was martial arts. He began practicing karate at the age of eight and was a dedicated member of Seikukan Karate Hall in Newport News for over 40 years. There, under the mentorship of Sensei Terumasa Ogawa, Matthew found a second family and a lifelong source of strength, discipline, and connection. The dojo and its community were a central part of his life, and he gave back through both his teaching and his enduring friendships.

Matthew was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Massimo and Luisa Nazzaro. He is survived by his mother, Yongcha Ayers; his sister, Luisa Nazzaro (Seth), and their children, Thomas and Anna; his father, Emil Nazzaro (Robin); his brother, Michael Nazzaro (Amber), and their children, Stefan and Sam. He is also survived by his aunt, Luisa Nazzaro; his uncle, Matthew Nazzaro (Ann); cousins John Kim, Jae Kim, Jerry Kim, Dale Kim, and Daria Fortunato; his best friend, Rob Doane; and many additional beloved cousins, extended family members, and lifelong friends.

Over the years, Matthew touched the lives of those around him with his presence and left a lasting impression on those who knew him. Matthew’s warmth, quiet strength, and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. May his memory bring comfort and peace to all who mourn his passing.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Virginia Living Museum in Matthew’s honor.
