It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Joseph “Joe” Alan Ely, 74, a beloved brother and uncle, who went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 11, 2025. Joe was born in Newport News, VA, to John Lovett and Erma Flowers Ely.

Joe leaves behind a legacy of kindness, humor, and love. He was a dedicated and dependable railroad conductor and brakeman for 38 years. Passionate about trains, he was a member of a Railfans group for many years.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his brother, John S. Ely (Cathy); nephews, Jeffrey Ely (Kathryn), Timothy Ely (Alyssa) and Travis Machado; nieces, Shannon DeWalt (Jody) and Heidi Wright (Andy) and several great-nieces and nephews.

A private family service will be held. Burial will be at Peninsula Memorial Park.

The family would like to thank all the caregivers at James River Hospice and Chippenham Hospital. Joe spoke highly of you. Also, thanks to the residents of Heritage Oaks who befriended him and sent encouraging notes. It brought a smile to his face when he read them. Also, thanks to his railroad buddies who kept in touch with him during the past year. It gave him joy and encouragement.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association in Joe’s memory.
