John Edgar Moravetz, born on September 22, 1941, in Washington, D.C. John died peacefully on January 18, 2025, after a long and courageous effort to manage an aggressive cancer, with his wife and brother-in-law, Charles Bowen by his side.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Joanne Bowen; sister, Patricia Ellison; and many beloved family members.
John’s life was his passion for service to humankind, beginning in the 1960s working in public housing, and later pursuing a teaching career. Special education was his first calling, but his love of history led him to teach American history at Thomas Nelson Community College, and Gloucester High School. In retirement he returned to his roots, and with his strong faith he supported the sheltered homeless of Williamsburg. In small and large ways, John’s kindness and generosity touched many lives.
A memorial service will be held on February 1, 1 p.m., at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 1333 Jamestown Rd, Williamsburg, VA. The service will be livestreamed on YouTube.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Williamsburg Area Meals On Wheels, Greater Williamsburg Outreach Mission Ltd., or FISH Williamsburg.
