Sylvester “Flute” McKinley Brokenberry, 90, of Williamsburg

Sylvester “Flute” McKinley Brokenberry (Whiting’s Funeral Home)

Sylvester McKinley Brokenberry, affectionately known as “Flute,” was born on September 2, 1934, in Williamsburg, Virginia, to Douglas Green and Vizelle Brokenberry.

He received his education in the Williamsburg-James City County Public School System. A man of strong faith, Sylvester embraced Christ at an early age. He maintained his devotion throughout his life attending various churches. In 1999, he rededicated his life and was baptized by Pastor Rose.

Sylvester’s many jobs included construction work with Joseph Terrell, Southern Pancake House, the Williamsburg-James City County Courthouse, and the Soap & Candle factory. In his leisure time, he enjoyed staying informed by reading the daily newspaper and magazines and keeping up with current events. He was also a passionate fan of classic Western films. A beloved figure in the community, Flute could often be seen enjoying the outdoors in the Grove Area.

With a contagious laugh and a playful sense of humor, Flute was a spirited individual who cherished spending time with family & friends. He also appreciated good music, with “I Know I’ve Been Changed” being one of his favorite songs. He was a talented singer and often delighted others by sharing his musical gifts.

Most importantly, Sylvester was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Ethel Brokenberry, with whom he shared a loving marriage for over sixty years. Together, they raised four children.

Sylvester was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ethel Brokenberry; mother, Vizelle Brokenberry Tynes; father, Douglas Green; and two grandchildren, Rachana Brokenberry and Marcelle Brokenberry.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his daughters; Cheryl, Phyllis, and Sylvia (Raynard); son, Anthony; grandchildren, Benita, Derek, Shalonda, Tasha, Mondel, Lauren, Miranda (Greg), Candice, Sapphire, and Montrell; great-grandchildren, Daisha, Aja, Rashaad, Darius, Amani, Angel, Harmoni, Tino, Zachias, Anastasia, Honesty, Alanni, Chance, Shyla, and Elias; his great-great-grandchildren, Jakoby and Magic; devoted cousin Cynthia Kellow; longtime devoted friend Charles Harris; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
