Jay Homer Smith, Age 77, passed away on March 2, 2024.
He was born September 23, 1946 in Washington D.C. to Homer and Sylvia Smith. He attended Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, M.D., graduating in 1964. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering in 1968 from Syracuse University in New York. While there, he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilone Fraternity.
Upon graduating, he began a long and successful career in the oil and gas industry, beginning with Shell Oil Company in New Orleans and continuing on with British Petroleum as well as several other small energy companies. He successfully completed the program for Management Development, 54th session, an Executive Education Program of the Harvard Business School.
His activities in his local community included membership in the Williamsburg Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, receiving the Bronze Roger Sherman Medal and a Certificate of Distinguished Service. He was also involved in the Executive Partner Program at the College of William and Mary.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Joanne Culler and Linda Waldron, and his nephews Richard Culler and Keith Waldron. He is survived by his wife Jamie, daughter Jennifer, son-in-law Joshua Hastert, and sister-in-law Sharyn Sabella, as well as his nieces Laura Comfort, Claire Mack, Beth McNamara and many great nieces and nephews.
A Memorial service will be held at the Bucktrout Funeral Home on March 10, 2024. Visitation begins at 1 p.m., and the service begins at 3 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Alzheimer’s Association, and the Hospice House of Williamsburg, Virginia.
