Mary Jane Hill McCarthy, age 98, a resident of Virginia Beach, VA, died February 24, 2024.
Born in Middletown, CT on March 29, 1925. Mary Jane was the daughter of the late Mary E. O’Connell Hill and Edward J. Hill. At the age of 26 she married an adorable Navy sailor, and accompanied him across the United States and abroad in his military career. She appreciated the many friends she made along the way.
Mary Jane became a member of The Church of Ascension, where she found wonderful companionship with the Rainbows, traveled the world, and met her best friend Maria Toneatto. Her life truly turned into one big party for the next 28 years!
Mary Jane was also an avid golfer, played bridge, Pacchino, Majong, Bowling, had the “Out to Lunch Bunch,” with the RedHats, and was the life of every gathering!. Later she joined the Church of the Holy Apostles in Virginia Beach, and the Remembrance Group (who became like family), as well as the Retired Officers Wives. Mary Jane enjoyed returning to Middletown for reunions of her 1943 “Blackout Class” of Middletown High School, her many travels with Senior Partners of Towne Bank and winters spent in New Smyrna Beach, FL.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cmdr. Charles J. McCarthy, USN (retired), a son, Timothy James McCarthy, brother, Edward J. Hill, Jr., sister, Frances Hurley and a special cousin, Judy Bonfoey Misenti, all of Connecticut. She is survived by a son, C.J. McCarthy III (Sylvia) of Palm Coast, FL, daughter, Eileen Lee of Onancock, VA, sister, Margaret Kreitner of Connecticut, two grandsons, Vincent P. Lee of Virginia Beach and Timothy B. Lee of Accomack, VA and two great granddaughters, Adrianna & Madelynn Lee of the Eastern Shore of VA, plus numerous nieces & nephews.
The family will receive friends at Altmeyer Funeral Home Southside Chapel (5033 Rouse Dr., Virginia Beach, VA 23462) on Thursday, February 29, 2024 from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Church of The Holy Apostles (1593 Lynnhaven Pkwy, Virginia Beach, VA 23453) on Friday, March 1, 2024 at 11 a.m. Private burial will be with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery.
