Gloria “Meme” Butler Hogge, 77, of Shacklefords, VA, passed away suddenly the morning of January 21, 2024.
She was the daughter of the late Hazel Palmer and Linwood Butler. Gloria was a 1965 graduate of Varina High School. Among other jobs, she worked at Sears & Roebuck, where she would meet her future husband, Thomas William Hogge of Shackleford. They were happily married for over 58 years.
For over 25 years, Gloria kept a watchful eye on many, many children, often caring for two generations in a single family. She was fondly referred to as “Meme” by the hundreds of children under her care over the years, and she sincerely cherished each one.
Gloria was also a long-time member of Poroporone Baptist Church. She enjoyed traveling and cooking (at which she excelled), but her favorite pastime was shopping (which she also excelled at, much to Williams’ chagrin)!
She is survived by her spouse Thomas “William” Hogge; her daughter Maria Hogge Inge(Larry); and her son Thomas Linwood Hogge; four grandchildren, Jennifer Nicole Inge, Jonathan Tyler Inge, Elana Cailyn Hogge, and Brianna Rose Hogge; and finally, her beloved dog Angel.
The grieving family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, January 25 at Vincent Funeral Home, 417 11th Street, West Point. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Friday, January 26 at Poroporone Baptist Church, 30071 The Trail, Shacklefords, VA 23156.
