Craig Howard Wynn was born at New York City’s Harlem Hospital on July 28, 1958. He was welcomed into this world by his adoring parents, James “Duke” and Theresa Wynn, and his older brother Kevin.
Duke and Theresa raised their family in Red Hook, Brooklyn, then Hollis, Queens. No matter where they were, their house was often frequented by an abundance of loved ones. Craig and Kevin had several cousins in their age bracket; Yvette, Lynette, Donnie, Vincent, and Daryl. They all would play together and were inseparable as youths. Craig and Kevin also grew up really close with older cousins Yvonne and Gail.
From early on, it was clear Craig was blessed with charisma like no other. He had the gift of gab, and everyone gravitated toward him. Once you were around him, there was no way you would leave Craig without having a hearty laugh. He loved to crack jokes and had a huge grin, snicker, and subsequent laugh from the bottom of his gut. Craig also loved music. Seeing him sing and dance to R&B artists such as Marvin Gaye and Dru Hill in his house was a constant occurrence. He also loved to drive around blasting music and singing too. Craig’s other passions were keeping up with fashion as well as cooking and eating.
As a teenager, Craig attended Andrew Jackson High school. A few years later, he began his career at New York Telephone, where he served as an Installation Technician. During one of his frequent trips to Newport News, Virginia, to visit family as a youngster, Craig struck up a friendship with a woman who would change his life, Denise Copeland. The two friends fell in love, married, and raised three children together; twins, Shaunta and Shaunna, and their son, Tuere. Craig and Denise made a home for their family in LeFrak City, Queens, and later moved to Newport News, VA. Kevin, James, and Theresa would all move to Newport News soon after. Through subsequent different unions, Craig was also blessed with two other children, Krystal and Craig Jr.
Later in life, under the guidance of his best friend since childhood Eddie “Mister” Ingram, Craig relocated to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He worked at UNC Hospital as Team Leader of House Keeping. In addition to those duties, Craig served on the merchandise committee for Narcotics Anonymous. Through N.A., he found his true calling in life, helping others. He served as a faithful and committed constituent for a decade. Craig was a very strong voice and powerful force in helping those that had lost their way to gain and maintain sobriety.
During his latter years, Craig returned to Newport News and joined Colossian Baptist Church. He was part of the Sick and Shut In Ministries. Unfortunately, Craig suffered from a serious heart condition and respiratory problems. Even still, he kept his trademarked grin and jokes whenever you saw him. On September 1, 2022, God called Craig home at the age of 64.
Proceeding him on his journey to Heaven are his brother, Kevin Wynn, and two grandchildren, Imani Wynn and Jamel Johnson. Craig leaves behind in great sorrow his parents, James and Theresa Wynn; five children, Shaunta Wynn Miller, Shaunna Wynn, Tuere Wynn, Krystal Wynn, and Craig Wynn Ferguson; eleven grandchildren; a great-grandson; ex-wife, Denise Godson Shaheem; a plethora of cousins including Ari, Taniesha, and the aforementioned; loving uncle, Donald Blizzard; Mister and the entire Ingram family; special friends, JT, Johnny, Clay, Cheryl, and Yolanda; and a host of other family, friends, co-workers, and beloved acquaintances. Craig is loved and missed by all. He was unforgettable.
