It is with great sadness that we share news of the death of Michael Joseph Danehy, 84, at home on June 11, 2022, after a period of declining health. He enjoyed recent visits from each of his 4 children, 11 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren, and was lovingly cared for by his wife of 62 years, Suzanne. As his time drew near, Mike reflected with appreciation on the memories of a lifetime, and he drew strength from his faith about what was to come.
He was born to Francis William Danehy and Anna Ryan Danehy in Canastota, New York. He was raised on the family farm, along with brothers, William and James, and sisters, Patricia and Mary Ellen. Mike graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Agricultural Engineering in 1960, the same year he and Suzanne were married. After a brief stint at Firestone Tire in Ohio, he spent two formative years on active duty in the U.S. Army, serving in Europe after the erection of the Berlin Wall. In 1963, Mike and Sue moved their growing family to Canton, NY, where Mike enjoyed a 32-year career as a faculty member and Dean of the Engineering Technology Division at SUNY Canton. During those busy years Mike earned a Master’s degree at Clarkson, helped establish a girls’ softball league, made lifelong friends, and provided the children with many happy memories of camping trips and family get-togethers in Central New York. In 2001, Mike and Sue moved to Virginia, living first in Williamsburg, and then in Newport News. For many years they continued to enjoy traveling, especially to visit friends and family.
Michael is survived by his wife, Suzanne DeLorme Danehy; daughter, Patricia (Paul Catsos, children, Christine, Michael, and Laura); daughter, Marianne (Chuck Stovall, children, William and Anna); daughter, Catherine (children, Alena, Sarah, Julia, Brett and grandchildren, Maxwell and Cameron); son, Paul (Shelly Simonds, children, Tessa and Georgia).
A Memorial Mass will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 17, 2022 at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church by Rev. Bob Spencer. Interment will take place at a later date at St. James Roman Catholic Church Cemetery in Cazenovia, NY with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank, hrfoodbank.org. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
