Benjamin Suan “Ben” Garcia, 91, peacefully went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, in Chesapeake, Va. Benjamin was a native of Baguio City, Philippines, and the son of the late Genaro and Rosita Garcia.
He is survived by his eight children, Tony Joe Chinsio and family of Chicago, Ill., Edmund Garcia and family of Silverdale, Wash., Oscar Garcia and family of Phoenix, Ariz., Nestor Garcia of Heber, Ariz., Belen G. Ngo and family of Chesapeake, Va., Benjamin Garcia Jr. and family of Virginia Beach, Va., John Alfred Garcia and family of Chandler, Ariz., and Robert B. Garcia and family of San Diego, Calif., and second wife Gloria. He was blessed with 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Ben is also survived by two younger brothers, Juanito Garcia of San Diego, Calif., and Manuel Garcia of Silver Spring, Md.; and his older sister, Josepha Oracion of La Trinidad, Benguet, Philippines.
Ben lived a beautiful and eventful life. He was a builder, an entrepreneur, and a politician. His greatest legacy; however, is that through his Christian faith. The seeds of faith he planted have bloomed not only within his immediate family, but also to his extended family filled with Christ-believing nieces, nephews, etc.
In 1954, God used Pastor Woods, a missionary in Baguio Philippines, to introduce the gospel to Ben. Ben was 28 years old when he received Christ as his Lord and Savior. Throughout his life, through the ups and the downs, since he was always focused on his faith and love for family, his legacy of his faith lives on. His children, nieces, and nephews tell of their fond memories of Pines Baptist Church, where “Uncle Ben” would bring them every Sunday. Today, three generations of his family are believers in Christ (and a few are currently serving in full-time ministry), only because he answered to the Lord’s calling for his life.
His memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 10, at the Chesapeake chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Pastor Steve Hildebrandt of Grace Community Church will be officiating the service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 11 a.m. Refreshments will be served after the service in the upstairs reception hall of the building.
