Seth Felton ‘Al’ Squires, 90, known as ‘the mayor of Avalon Hills’

Seth Felton ‘Al’ Squires, 90, of Virginia Beach, left this world to be with his cherished wife, Jane, and beloved pets, Bugga Bear and Yogi Bear, on Sunday, April 17, 2016.

He was born on November 5, 1925, to Seth and Cora (Cahoon) Squires in Riddles, N.C.

Seth was preceded in death by his wife, Jane A. Squires; and sisters, Edith Squires, Pauline Cohoon Marissa Buxton.

He is survived by his sisters-in-law, Sandra (Raybon) Stallings and Eloise Peters; and four nieces, six great-nieces and two great-nephews.

In his younger years as a merchant marine, he traveled to many foreign ports. Al retired from Hall Hodges, where he was a metal shop foreman. He was a member of Indian River Masonic Lodge. Al was known affectionately by his neighbors and friends as the Mayor of Avalon Hills.

The family would like to thank Roy (Audrey) Sorey, Mike (Glenda) Winstead and the wonderful community of Avalon Hills for their caring, love and support through Al’s illness.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 22, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach. Graveside services will be held on at noon Saturday, April 23, in Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach.

The family asks that donations be made to the Kempsville Rescue Squad, Virginia Beach SPCA, or a charity of one’s choice.
