Hugo Mikael Luoto Jr., 87, retired from Norfolk Naval Station after 21 years in Navy

Retired U.S. Navy Cmdr. Hugo Mikael Luoto Jr., 87, of Virginia Beach and formerly of Newport News, passed away on Wednesday April 6, 2016. Born in Centerville, Cape Cod, Maine, he was the son of the late Hugo M. Luoto, birth mother, Agnes E. Wannie Luoto and Helen Merivita Luoto.

He was a graduate of Quincy High School and the University of Massachusetts. He earned his master’s degree at the University of Michigan. Hugo served in the U.S. Navy for 21 years and retired as commander, serving at Norfolk Naval Station.

He was a loving husband of 54 years to the late Marilyn Shaw Luoto. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Carl Luoto.

He is survived by two sons, Brian (Joan) Luoto and David (Donna) Luoto; and two daughters, Ellen Simmons, and fiancé, John and Carol (Dan) Aubuchon. Hugo was blessed with 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 11, 2016, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 4200 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the National Kidney Foundation.
