
Will Gibson broke a scoreless tie late in the second half as Williamsburg Christian Academy edged visiting Benedictine 1-0 at home Tuesday.
The game was a defensive battle throughout until Gibson found the back of the net from just inside the 18 yard line on the right side.
Despite fielding three new starters, WCA’s back line limited Benedictine to seven shots on goal, with keeper Luke Pfeifer stopping all seven shots fired his way to record the shutout.
The Eagles (1-0) will open Metro Conference tournament play Thursday against Portsmouth Christian Academy.
Walsingham Falls to Defending State Champs
Walsingham Academy played the defending VISAA Division 2 state champions tough, but Covenant continued its unbeaten season with a 2-0 shutout over the Trojans on Tuesday.
Walsingham (1-1) saw a few good chances during the second half — Kian Lawlor had a one-on-one with Covenant’s keeper and Kelau Smith put a free kick on goal that was tapped over the bar — but was unable to put one in the back of the net.
Walsingham coach Richard Plank said keeper Alex Bolton was stellar in goal with 13 saves in addition to doing a terrific job directing the defense.
The Trojans will next play Trinity Christian on the road Thursday.

Hampton Roads Academy Dominates in Season Opener
Jalen Johnson filled up the stat sheet with two goals and two assists as HRA jumped out to a 5-0 lead at the half before holding on to win its season opener 8-0 over Nansemond Suffolk Academy.
Taylor Shuford and Patrick Phillips added two goals and one assist apiece in the victory for the Navigators, who play Trinity Episcopal on the road next Thursday.
