Seniors Devonte Dedmon of Warhill and Keyana Brown of Lafayette were recently voted the 3A Colonial Conference 25 boys and girls basketball Players of the Year.

Brown, who will play on scholarship next season at Old Dominion University, transferred to Lafayette from Williamsburg Christian Academy for her senior season, to play under her father, Chris Brown, who took the helm as the Rams head coach. The two helped turn around Lafayette’s 10-12 record from last season to a 20-4 overall record this winter. After capturing the conference title last week, Lafayette’s season ended with a loss to Huguenot in Monday’s East Region quarterfinals.

Brown finished the season as the Bay Rivers District’s leading scorer with averages of 23 points, 9.2 rebounds, 4.5 steals and 3.3 assists per game.

Brown’s teammate, Tiara Strong, was also selected for the all-conference first team. She averaged 11.3 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocks. Junior forward Kasey Grainer (14.2 ppg, 7.2 rbg) and freshman point guard Kieran McClure (11 points, 5.2 apg, 3.8 rpg), both from Warhill, were also named first-team all-conference.

Dedmon, who signed to play football for the College of William and Mary next year, scored 20 or more points in all but two of the Lions’ 21 games this season.

The third Bay Rivers District player ever to average 28.0 points per game during a season, the 5-foot-11 speedster also led Warhill (8-13) in rebounds (5.3), assists (2.0) and steals (2.5). He also set the Lions’ school record for points in a game with 48 in game versus York back in December.

Other local players voted to the first team were Lafayette’s Mark Rivera, who averaged 16 points per game this season, and York’s Joe Riddick (12.5 ppg, 4.9 rbg, 4.0 apg).

The entire all-conference teams are posted below. Note that there were no honorable mentions selected on the girls’ side.
