The Heritage Humane Society says it’s time to run with the big dogs … and the little dogs, young dogs and even walk with the old dogs as registration opens for this year’s annual FURever Homes Race.
The 5th annual FURever Homes Race will be held on June 15. Located at Jamestown High School, participants of all skill levels can opt for the 8K, 5K or one-mile Fun Run, or they can participate virtually. For the area’s dedicated race enthusiasts, the FURever Homes Race is a Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix event.
Supporters are also invited to come out to cheer on race participants and enjoy all the event offers. There will be a Vendor Village showcasing community talents. Music will fill the air compliments of The Tide Radio/WYDaily, which is returning as the Media Sponsor for the event. Andy Harris from The Tide Radio will be at the event playing tunes for everyone.
Food will be available, and there will be family fun and raffles. Leashed dogs are welcome at Vendor Village and can participate in the 5K and one-mile Fun Run. Dogs must be up-to-date on vaccinations to attend. For the safety of the runners/walkers, the shelter is asking that dogs be on non-retractable leashes only.
Race route options and overview
Race day kicks off with Vendor Village opening at 7 a.m. The one-mile Fun Run participants begin at 8 a.m., followed by 8K runners taking their mark at 8:30 a.m. and 5K participants taking theirs at 8:50 p.m. New for this year, every participant receives a custom medal. Refuel with hot-diggity dogs
Will it be a classic chili cheese dog, a nostalgic Coney dog or the southern twist of a Lowcountry dog to reward the taste buds? Dominion Dogs will be at the FURever Homes Race serving hot hogs, vegan dogs, sides, and drinks. A portion of sales will benefit the shelter.
Sponsorships opportunities are still available
Dominion Dogs are also a Friends Sponsor of the race. To join in the support and to increase awareness in Greater Williamsburg’s pet-loving community, there are last-minute FURever Homes Race sponsorships available.
Make it a photo finish
Nicole Moyer from Sweet Ellie Photography is returning as the event photographer. She will be taking photos of the pets and participants at the event. The Heritage Humane Society will post the photo album on the HHS Facebook Page after the event. To add to the anticipation for this year’s race, view the photo album from last year’s race.
Adoptable pets ready for a forever home
The shelter is filled with homeless pets who are eager to have forever homes. There are many dogs who would love to be adopted or fostered and participate in the FURever Homes Race.
Over 170 dogs, cats and small pets are currently in their care. Adoptable pets are available to meet during The Heritage Humane Society’s visiting and adopting hours from noon to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday.
