The Williamsburg-James City County School Board has named several new administrators to lead different parts of the school division — but one principal’s new position is going to look very familiar.
Jeffrey D. Carroll, former principal of Warhill High School and current assistant superintendent for secondary school leadership, will return to Warhill on July 1 to serve as principal, the school division said in a news release.
Carroll’s appointment was one of several personnel appointments made by the school board at a meeting Tuesday. Other new personnel include:
- Astrid E. Howell, assistant principal for the new James Blair Middle School
- Eileen M. Cox, senior director of communications and engagement
- Tiffany D. Speight, director of finance
- Brian Weaver, supervisor for building security and services.
Carroll’s return to Warhill follows the resignation of Warhill Principal Dr. Mark Hudson.
Carroll served as Warhill principal from 2013 to 2017, leaving the position after he was appointed assistant superintendent for secondary school leadership, which oversees the division’s middle and high schools.
Carroll started working in the school division in 2009 as principal of J. Blaine Blayton Elementary School. He moved into the Lafayette High School assistant principal position in 2011, then transitioned to Warhill in 2013.
“I am happy to again focus my leadership and commitment on Warhill High School. I look forward to daily interaction with students and families, the relationships with teachers and staff, and the energy associated with working in a school,” Dr. Carroll said.
A little about the other appointments:
Astrid Howell: Howell joins the James Blair Middle School administration after working as a school improvement specialist at Berkeley Middle School.
She began her career in education in 2002 as a special education teacher at Mt. Vernon High School in Alexandria. She eventually joined WJCC Public Schools in 2016 as the school improvement specialist for Lafayette High School.
Eileen M. Cox: Cox comes to WJCC Public Schools from Virginia Beach, where she worked as the chief media and communications officer.
In WJCC schools, Cox will handle media relations, crisis communications, publications, the school division’s website and social media platforms. She will also lead volunteer, partnership and parent involvement initiatives.
Before working for Virginia Beach City Public Schools in 2004, Cox worked for 14 years in broadcast journalism.
Tiffany D. Speight: Speight will enter the director of finance position on July 9. She will manage the school system’s payroll, accounts payable and receivable and grants management.
Speight previously worked for Norfolk Public Schools for 11 years as its grants accountant and senior coordinator-grants manager.
Brian Weaver: Weaver will become the school division’s supervisor for building security and services, after serving as energy, environmental and security specialist for about nine years.
The new position “places an increased emphasis on safety and security planning,” the division said.
Weaver first joined WJCC schools as a teacher at Clara Byrd Baker Elementary, later transitioning to Matthew Whaley Elementary.
