HAMPTON — Thomas Nelson Community College will hold an athletics open house and recruiting event for women at 5:30 p.m. June 22.

Coaches and athletes will be on hand to answer questions and discuss college athletic life. An academic adviser will also be available to explain student-athlete requirements and programs the college has to offer. Attendees will be able to apply to the college and sign up for a campus tour at the event.

The college, which is transitioning to Virginia Peninsula Community College, currently fields intercollegiate teams in baseball, men’s basketball and women’s basketball.

In late April, the college announced it is expanding its sports programs by adding six teams in the next three years. Women’s volleyball and softball will be added in the 2022-23 academic year.

Two more teams will be added in 2023-24, and two more in 2024-25, bringing the total of sports teams to nine. The college is still examining which sports teams to add after 2022-23. Soccer, track and field, and cross country are among the sports under consideration.

Prospective athletes can attend the open house in person at Hampton’s Peninsula Workforce Development Center on Butler Farm Road or online. Pre-registration is recommended but not required.
