The Children’s Advocacy Centers of Virginia are having their annual Crimes Against Children Conference at the Hampton Roads Convention Center later this month.

The deadline to register is Sept. 17.

“Child abuse is everywhere, across the state and across the nation,” said Janice Dinkins-Davidson, executive director for the Children’s Advocacy Centers of Virginia. “It’s every child that needs to be protected from child abuse.”

The CACVA is a membership organization dedicated to help local communities respond to child maltreatment and provides training, support, technical assistance and leadership to local child advocacy centers, such as the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters and communities responding to reports of child abuse and neglect, according to CACVA’s website.

The three-day conference provides in-depth training for professionals such as investigators, law enforcement, child protective services, mental health agencies and victim advocates about child abuse, the best practices to deal with child abuse cases and using new, emerging research and techniques, Dinkins-Davidson added.

Tickets cost anywhere from $100-400 and proceeds go to the nonprofit and other training seminars. Last year, 250 people registered.

In addition, the event includes 46 workshops presented by child maltreatment field experts from across the country and features keynote speaker, Ron Culberson, a clinical social worker, manager and leader.

“We want the continuing education professionals who are working in the communities in Virginia to have access to the best information,” she said.

Next year’s conference is Sept. 21-23 at the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel in Williamsburg.
