Here’s what you need to know if you’re planning on voting in the Republican primary in Williamsburg

The city of Williamsburg will be hosting drive-thru-style voting once again for the June 23 Republican primary.

Officials announced Monday it would host a drive-thru-style voting at the Williamsburg Fire Department. The election had originally been scheduled for June 9, but was postponed by two weeks by Gov. Ralph Northam due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This drive-thru-style voting is similar to the elections held in May.

Drivers will pull into the second entrance of the Municipal Building parking lot and drive through the back parking lot toward the fire station. Drivers will then stop at Armistead Avenue and an election officer will direct them to the appropriate line to cast a ballot for their precinct.

The driver will then cross Armistead Avenue and pull into the fire station back parking lot where they will drive into the appropriate parking bay.

An elections officer will be available to help voters in their vehicle and a full staff will be on site to operate each precinct. Election officers will wear personal protective equipment, such as masks and gloves, and all voters are required to remain in their vehicles while they complete their ballots.

Voters will hand their ballots to an elections officer who will then place the ballot in a counting machine within eyesight of each voter.

Voters may also be given a privacy ballot upon request.

Election officers will clean and sanitize all equipment touched by the voter during this process.

Drivers will exit the fire station on Lafayette Street after casting their ballots.

Voters are required to have one of the following forms of photo identification:

  • A Virginia driver’s license
  • A photo identification card issued by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles
  • A U.S. passport
  • An employer-issued identification photo
  • A school-issued photo ID

For more information on voter identification requirements, visit the Virginia Department of Elections online.

The city will also offer curbside service to residents until June 20. Voters can come to the Officer of Elections from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday through Friday to register to vote. Drivers should park at the Municipal Building, 401 Lafayette Street, and call 757-220-6157 for assistance.
