NEWPORT NEWS — A police officer here was arrested Friday on serious allegations of raping a juvenile.
Robert Jones, 46, is charged with two counts of rape, four counts of taking indecent liberties and one count each of carnal knowledge, forcible sodomy and criminal solicitation, authorities said, adding the “suspect and the victim were known to each other.”
Newport News Police officials said Jones was placed on administrative leave without pay pending the outcome of his criminal case and an internal investigation.
Jones, who has been with NNPD since 2007, was assigned to the North Precinct.
The investigation began shortly after police received a complaint in June 2018.
“We take these allegations seriously and are working closely with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office regarding the criminal charges,” police Chief Steve Drew said in a prepared statement.
A jail mugshot of Jones was not made immediately available.
