WILLIAMSBURG — Centerstage Academy is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a special production of ‘Shrek the Musical’ this weekend only, Aug 16-17.
Centerstage first opened its doors in 1995. The production of “Shrek the Musical” was first performed at Centerstage about a decade ago. With the story featuring a crazy band of family and friends who learn that everyone has a story to tell, Centerstage says it was the perfect show for the occasion.
The production will feature two different casts, the Freak Flag cast and the Believer cast. Centerstage said it had to double-cast some of the roles to showcase the talent of its cast of Centerstage students, alumni, faculty and friends.
The academy also notes audiences can expect a special guest appearance by a thirteen-foot, fire-breathing pink dragon puppet, who has her glowing eyes and fluttering lashes fixed on Donkey.
“Coming back to this show 10 years later with former students, current students, and staff has been a highlight of my career. It’s a professional quality show full of budding talent and seasoned talent. You won’t find this quality of entertainment at this ticket price anywhere,” said Celeste Agett, Dragon & Choreographer.
The show will be staged at the all-new Glenn Close Theatre located in Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall at William & Mary. Renovations were completed in 2023. The show will feature professionally designed sets, lights, and sound.
“Being able to be a part of such a milestone performance in Centerstage’s history has been the most incredible experience. As someone whose musical theatre journey started in their 20th anniversary show, ‘Tarzan,’ and am now off pursuing musical theatre in college and beyond, I can truly attest to the level of care, professionalism, and commitment that Centerstage pours into their students,” said Ashton Hendrickson, who plays Fiona in the Believer cast.
“I have had such an incredible time in this show playing Fiona — a role I have been dreaming to play for years! I am so endlessly grateful to Cory, Rebecca, and everyone involved in this truly incredible production!” Hendrickson continued.
The production features Cory Steiger, Director & Set Design, Celeste Agett, Choreography and Music Director April Grosskopf.
