Local university to offer another varsity sport

Hampton University is now the first historically black college to offer a women’s triathlon varsity sports program.

The program starts next fall.

“I am proud of the Department of Athletics team that made the Hampton University Women’s Triathlon program a reality,” said William R. Harvey, HU president.

The USA Triathlon Foundation gave the university a $225,000 grant to increase diversity in college triathlon and help build a sustainable varsity program, according to university’s news release.

The grant money is spread out over five years and can be used for travel, equipment, coaching, scholarships and other-related expenses, according to HU’s announcement.
