Here are the closings for Hampton and Newport News

Hurricane Florence has strengthened to a Category 4 hurricane, targeting the Carolinas and Virginia.

Here are the closings and cancellations you need to know about.

Hampton

  • Hampton City Schools: Closed as of Tuesday, Sept. 11 for all students. Staff not in Zone A should report to prepare for hurricane prep.
  • All events cancelled at Hamptons Roads Convention Center through Saturday, Sept. 15
  • Trash collection: There will be no trash collection on Thursday and Friday. Residents are asked not to take their trash to the curb because high winds may knock trash bins over and bagged trash may block storm drains.
  • Thomas Nelson Community College campus in Hampton: Closed as of 8 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11 until Sunday,  Sept. 16. Essential personnel should report as advised by supervisors.
  • Fort Monroe: All events, activities and access to public recreation have been cancelled and/or closed for this week. Fort Monroe will likewise remain closed until further notice.
  • The Treasurer’s Office will close at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11.
  • City Council meeting Wednesday night has been rescheduled to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12 with no public comment period.
  • Buckroe Beach and Park Facilities will close at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12. The Farmers Market schedule for Saturday, Sept. 15 has been cancelled.
  • The Hampton History Museum auditions for Horror Tours will not be held Sept. 11-12. They will be rescheduled to Monday, Sept. 17 and Tuesday, Sept. 18 from 5-7 p.m.
  • The Hampton Diversity College session for Thursday, Sept. 13, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Northampton Community Center has been canceled.
  • Hampton University canceled classes (6 p.m. Tuesday). Classes will resume Monday.
  • Ruppert Sergeant Building (Assessor, Commissioner of the Revenue, Economic Development, Procurement, Treasurer): closed beginning Sept. 12
  • Hampton History Museum and Tourist Information Center: closed beginning Sept. 12
  • Healthy Families: closed beginning Sept. 12
  • Air Power Park and Athletics: closed beginning Sept. 12
  • Bluebird Gap Farm: closed beginning Sept. 12
  • Gosnold’s Hope Park: closed beginning Sept. 12
  • Fort Monroe Community Center: closed beginning Sept. 12
  • West Hampton Community Center: closed beginning Sept. 12
  •  The Northampton Branch Library will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, and Thursday, Sept. 13.  However, the Main Library and the Willow Oaks Branch Library remain open.
  • Hampton courts will close at noon Wednesday through the end of the week.
  • The Community Development Department will stop normal construction inspections after the close of business on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018.  They will resume after any damage assessments are completed.

Newport News

  • Newport News Public Schools: Closed as of Tuesday, Sept. 11 for all students. Staff not in Zone A should report to prepare for hurricane prep.
  • Hampton Roads Academy: Closing at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11.
  • Christopher Newport University: Closed Wednesday, Sept. 12 – Sunday, Sept. 16.
  • Trash Collection: Collection will take place Wednesday, Sept. 12 but not on Thursday, Sept. 13. Trash will instead be picked up Monday, Sept. 17. Next week’s regular collections will be delayed one day (i.e. Monday’s collection will take place on Tuesday, Tuesday’s on Wednesday, etc.)
  • Mariners’ Museum will be closed Wednesday-Friday. Reopen on Saturday.

Roadways/Transportation

  • The Virginia Department of Transportation Hampton Roads District (VDOT) is suspending lane closures on Interstate 64 and Interstate 664 starting Monday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. For more info click here.
  • HRT will suspend service from Thursday through Sunday. Paratransit customers are urged Paratransit customers are encouraged not to schedule trips beginning Wednesday and to make other transportation arrangements through Monday. To help people in the hours before the storm lands, HRT will suspend fare collection on its bus system on Wednesday

Other cancellations:

Saint Leo University is closing all of its education centers in Virginia with the exception of its Fort Lee location, due to the threat of Hurricane Florence.

Classes are canceled beginning Tuesday through Saturday.

The University officials anticipate reopening the Virginia locations on Monday, Sept. 17.

Saint Leo University will continue to monitor Hurricane Florence. Students, faculty, and staff are asked to check the Saint Leo website (www.saintleo.edu) for updates.

Among Saint Leo locations that are closed are:

  • Fort Eustis Education Office, 1500 Madison Ave., U.S. Army Education Center, Fort Eustis.
  •  Langley Education Office, 450 Weyland Road, Langley AFB.
  •  Newport News Education Center, One BayPort Way, Suite 160, Newport News.

In addition, Saint Leo University closed its South Carolina locations and classes are canceled. Saint Leo’s North Charleston, Shaw Air Force Base, and Sumter locations are closed Tuesday and will remain closed through Friday.
