NEWPORT NEWS — The city police department received some high praise.
Last month, the United States Attorney’s Office, including United States acting attorney Tracy Doherty-McCormick, honored the department’s contributions that led to the conviction of more than 105 felons, resulting in sentences of more than 520 years.
The department was recognized at the 2018 Public Service Awards.
From its early days and throughout its history, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia has led the nation in investigating and prosecuting cases of national and international significance, according to a news release from the city.
