Photo Gallery: Visit Williamsburg Unveils the Great American Birthday Quilt

WILLIAMSBURG— To celebrate America’s 250th birthday, Visit Williamsburg and Steve Prince, the Muscarelle Museum of Art’s director of engagement & distinguished artist in residence have been stitching quilt squares from around the nation to form the Great American Birthday Quilt.

Inspired by the original 1976 Bicentennial quilt, this modern version invited residents, organizations, and visitors to contribute individual quilt squares that reflect what America means today—its history, diversity, challenges, and hopes for the future.

The project was designed to be highly interactive, giving people of all ages and artistic abilities a chance to participate. Contributors created panels using fabric, stitching, and mixed media to tell personal or community stories. Many of the squares highlight themes such as service, heritage, cultural identity, and local pride, making the quilt a living snapshot of America in 2026.

On April 11, the final quilt was unveiled in a ceremony in Merchants Square in Colonial Williamsburg. The event included performances from the Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums and the Historic First Baptist Church choir, speeches from Visit Williamsburg and Muscarelle Museum of Art leadership, and the reading of stories by quilt contributors.

The highlight for many who attended was the unrolling of the 500 foot quilt, which was then marched from Merchants Square to the Colonial Williamsburg Visitors Center, where it will remain throughout the rest of 2026.
