James City Police Lieutenant Graduates from FBI National Academy

JAMES CITY COUNTY— Lieutenant Thomas N. Johnson Sr., a 25‑year law enforcement veteran, graduated from the prestigious FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, on March 18, 2026.

He was one of 253 law enforcement professionals to complete the 297th session, which included representatives from 48 states, the District of Columbia, 24 countries, four military organizations, and four federal civilian agencies. Fewer than one percent of law enforcement officers worldwide are selected to attend this advanced leadership program.

Lt. Johnson joined the James City County Police Department in 2002 after beginning his career with the Norfolk State University Police Department. Over the past two decades, he has served in a broad range of operational and supervisory roles, including Field Training Officer, General Instructor, SWAT Operator, Police Motorcycle Operator, Patrol Sergeant, Traffic Unit Sergeant, School Resource Unit Sergeant, Criminal Investigations Unit Sergeant, Criminal Investigations Lieutenant, and Patrol Lieutenant. He currently serves as the Special Operations Lieutenant, overseeing specialized public safety operations and critical response functions.

Throughout his career, Lt. Johnson has been recognized for his professionalism and leadership with numerous departmental honors, including the Police Medal of Honor, Lifesaving Award, Meritorious Service Award, Officer of the Year, Investigative Services Award, SWAT Operator of the Year, and the Supervisory Service Award.

Graduation from the FBI National Academy represents a significant milestone in Lt. Johnson’s professional development. During the ten‑week program, he trained alongside law enforcement leaders from across the country and internationally, focusing on leadership development, crisis management, officer wellness, and physical and mental resilience.

“My experience at the FBI National Academy was both humbling and inspiring,” Lt. Johnson said. “Training alongside law enforcement leaders from across the nation and around the world reinforced the importance of leadership, resilience, and wellness in our profession. I return to James City County with a renewed perspective and a deeper commitment to serving our community and supporting the officers who protect it.”
