JAMES CITY COUNTY — The Virginia Department of Transportation reopened a portion of the Virginia Capital Trail Jan. 15 following bridge work along the Jamestown leg of the trail.

Work included the replacement of the deck and superstructure on the wooden bridge between mile markers three and four.

The bridge, between access points at John Tyler Highway and Heritage Landing Road, was closed for a week-and-a-half. Crews installed new composite decking boards with added texture to improve friction on the bridge. The new decking is designed to provide a safe and reliable riding and walking surface for pedestrians and cyclists, and will extend the life of the bridge deck.

The  Virginia Capital Trail is a 52-mile bicycle and pedestrian shared-use trail that connects Virginia’s past and present state capitals of Jamestown, Williamsburg and Richmond along Route 5.
