YORK COUNTY — York County announced that curbside recycling services will resume in the county in January.

According to the county, it has issued a Notice of Intent to Award for Curbside Trash and Recycling Services to BFI Waste Management Services LLC, doing business as Republic Services of Yorktown.

Republic Services has provided curbside trash collection in York County for nearly 30 years.

The Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority Board of Directors voted in September to terminate its curbside recycling contract with Tidewater Fibre Corporation, effective Sept. 30. VPPSA is the regional waste authority.

York County’s curbside recycling program officially concluded with the termination of the contract on Sept. 30. At the time, the county said it was actively exploring alternative solutions to continue offering curbside recycling services. In the meantime, it told residents to take recycling to the Recycling Convenience Center at York County Waste Management. On a temporary basis, James City County also made the Jolly Pond and Toano convenience centers available to residents of York County for drop-off recycling.

The county said Republic Services was selected following a competitive procurement process and thorough review of proposals to continue as its trash collection provider and to begin curbside recycling services starting in January. The York County Board of Supervisors is expected to formally approve the contract at its Nov. 18 meeting.

“This is a significant step forward in restoring a service that our residents value deeply,” said Mark Bellamy, York County Administrator. “We appreciate the community’s patience as we worked to identify a long-term, sustainable solution for recycling in York County.”

The county provided the following key information for residents:

  • Recycling containers will not be collected from Nov. 1 through Dec. 31.
  • Residents are asked to retain their current recycling containers during this period.
  • Some residents may receive new or replacement containers before January; additional details will be shared in the coming weeks.
  • A bi-weekly recycling collection schedule will be provided prior to the start of service.

York County said “it remains committed to environmental stewardship and providing high-quality services to its residents.” For updates and more information, visit yorkcounty.gov/recycle.
