Riverside Health System announced a new “wellness program” ––Cancer Wellness –– to help recovering cancer patients.
Attendees meet in a “small group format,” learning everything from core and strength training and cardio workouts to yoga and mindfulness exercises, according to a news release from Riverside.
The 12-week program cost $90.
“This is a program designed for both survivors as well as for those currently undergoing treatment,” said Beth Gross, Riverside’s director of Clinical Wellness Development, in a prepared statement. “It’s meant to act also as a support group setting for individuals so they can talk about what they’re going through or what they had been going through.”
Gross will teach the classes. She’s an ACSM certified cancer exercise trainer.
She said by increasing cardiovascular endurance the person will increase their strength “so you don’t get tired after performing the activities of daily living.”
“The biggest benefit is from the mental aspect,” she said. “It helps people feel more positive about themselves. It reduces stress. The program really helps to improve mental wellbeing and decrease depression.”
The Cancer Wellness program meets at Riverside Wellness & Fitness Center – Peninsula, 12650 Jefferson Ave., starting Oct. 20 on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:30 p.m.
To participate, attendees must get screened with a temperature check before class and get medically cleared — from their doctor — to exercise. Spots are limited and masks are required in shared, common areas except for exercising.
For more information or to sign up for the program, call 757-875-7525 or visit the front desk at the wellness center.
