The elderly and those needing full-time care might have another option in the Historic Triangle.
The James City County Planning Commission recently approved a new assisted living facility.
Ryan Kiss from the Timmons Group, a civil engineering and consulting company, submitted an application for an assisted living facility, VHS Williamsburg off Richmond Road near Colonial Heritage.
The property, 6799 Richmond Road, is 23.45 acres considered mixed use with proffers and is currently owned by Newport News-based Virginia Health Services, Inc.
The building will total 160,670 square feet with one to three stories depending on the part of the building with a maximum height of 46 feet.
VHS Williamsburg will have 120 beds and the facility can be accessed via Richmond Road to Colonial Heritage Boulevard dubbed New Entry Road.
The applicant sent a conceptual plan to the Development Review Committee on April 17, 2019 and it was approved in November 2019, according to the staff report.
“The applicant has indicated that parcel A-1 will be subdivided, creating new parcels fronting on Richmond Road and allowing the assisted living facility to be situated on an interior parcel further from Richmond Road,” according to the staff analysis. “Staff finds this to be consistent with the approved design guidelines, which specify that the assisted living facility will be located on an interior parcel.”
The applicant has indicated the commercial buildings would not be another strip mall or “typical strip development,” according to the approved design guidelines document.
Frank Polster, representative from the Jamestown District made a motion during the Planning Commission meeting to discuss the plan prior to voting on the agenda item.
Barbara Null, representative from Stonehouse district, asked two questions:
- When one road, which is next to the project site, would be cut off from public access since it leads to a private community?
- Why the construction company needed access to Colonial Heritage Boulevard when the company has access via Richmond Road?
The answers were not immediately available and the Planning Commission unanimous approved the project’s site plan.
