Locals will have the opportunity to voice their opinions on the Clara Byrd Baker school transportation project.

James City County is hosting a community meeting Thursday along with Timmons Engineering, the consultant on the project, to discuss the Clara Byrd Baker Safe Routes transportation project, according to a news release from the county.

The project will include a 400-foot sidewalk along John Tyler Highway, 500 feet along Ironbound Road and adjacent to Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School to provide more pedestrian access that corresponds to the Safe Routes to School initiative.

The main points that will be discussed include the elementary school, Governor’s Grove and Village Square residential areas.

The project would also include a connection to the Powhatan Creek Trail, officials said.

In order to complete those aspects of the project, there will be minor improvements and adjustments made to the roadway, drainage facilities and utilities.

The current schedule for the project is to host a “citizen information meeting,” followed by a right-of-way acquisition and utility relocation from fall 2020 to spring 2021, then advertise for construction in the summer of 2021 and finally perform construction between fall 2021 to winter 2021, officials said.

The meeting will be from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m. on at Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School.
