HAMPTON — Fred Haise, one of the astronauts aboard the Apollo 13, is speaking at the Virginia Air and Space Museum next week.
The event, part of the museum’s Sigma Series Lectures, is a monthly talk related to science and technology. It is free and open to the public.
The Apollo 13 mission happened on April 11, 1970 and was scheduled to go to the moon but an oxygen tank explosion within the rocket forced the crew to return to Earth.
Haise was the lunar module pilot. He will discuss his experiences as an astronaut onboard the Apollo 13.
According to the news release, Haise, a Marine fighter pilot, worked at NASA for 20 years serving as an astronaut and a aeronautics research pilot. Afterwards, he worked for Northrop Grumman until he retired in 1966.
In addition, he is a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and is in the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame.
