More than candles and kitchen: Here’s how a new group in Williamsburg is creating space for women

A new event has come to Williamsburg to help women make connections with other women in meaningful and long lasting ways.

“I noticed a lot of women in Williamsburg were reaching out and looking for those relationships, and I thought ‘we need something for women of all ages, all religions to get together,’” said Tami Kramer, the creator of SHE Circle.

SHE Circle launched on Tuesday with 16 women gathering at Revolution Golf and Grille.

The event was designed to put women in touch with each other by introducing themselves and chatting about their interests and life stories.

The women came from a variety of backgrounds, from military to stay-at-home moms, to enjoy happy hour and dinner together while connecting on different topics.

“I got tired of people inviting me to things so you could shop,” Kramer said. “So often women are supposed to meet at these events where they’re selling products like candles or kitchenware, but women have more interests than that. We like architecture, science, politics. And I wanted to give women the opportunity to connect on those interests.”

The first event was originally set for Sept. 9 but was rescheduled after the threat of Hurricane Florence.

From the first meeting, the women have already started forming relationships by creating a book club and planning future events.

Kramer said she’d like to see the group continue to expand and provide the opportunity for even more women to meet and build friendships, because women-to-women bonds are important.

Kramer spent her life working in male-dominated fields from technology to the power industry and she knows what it’s like to miss out on female connections.

“Women tend to put ourselves last, with families and careers, and that can cause you to miss out on certain relationships,” Kramer said. “And when you get to know other women, when you can build that foundation, great things can happen.”

The idea for SHE Circle came to Kramer in August and by September, she already had a group of women who were interested.

“I came up with the name because a circle is a revolution and is constantly evolving and growing, and that’s what I want this to be for women,” she said.

The next meeting of SHE Circle has not been scheduled but Kramer said there are plans to gather in November and form other events as well, which will be updated on the group’s Facebook page.

All women are welcome but Kramer is firm on just one rule: be kind to one another.
