Where We Live: Newer home, older neighborhood

NORFOLK — A newer home in an older neighborhood, and on the river but at a minimal flood risk.

Life can’t get much better than that.

“When you live on the water like this, you feel like you are on vacation all year round. Nothing beats unwinding to a glorious sunset that paints the sky in vibrant strokes. It is simply good for the soul,” said Kathryn Kramer, a realtor with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services and the listing agent for the home at 5509 Willow Grove Court in Norfolk.

The home, she said, is situated on a quiet street in the desirable Waterlawn/Belvedere neighborhood of Norfolk. It was built in 1991 and expanded in 2001, and provides one of few rare opportunities to live in a historic neighborhood, but have a modern floor plan replete with amenities for today’s family, such as an open concept, large closets, attached garage, a second-floor laundry room, and bathrooms attached to all four bedrooms.

The home overlooks the Lafayette River, sitting on elevated ground, thus reducing the risk of flooding.

“The greatest feature of this house is unequivocally the gorgeous waterfront location over the pristine banks of the Lafayette River, ripe with breathtaking west-facing sunsets,” Kramer said. “The combination of low flood risk with direct waterfront access is both a rarity and a luxury when it comes to Norfolk real estate.”

The river itself has come alive again.

“The Lafayette River has historically suffered from pollution from urban runoff and neglect,” said Christy Everett of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. “But in recent past, there has been a community effort to restore the river. Citizens have planted native plants and helped replace the buffer along the shoreline which reduces pollution and creates habitat.”

Boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, water skiing, wake boarding, fishing, crabbing, and bird watching are all flourishing, Everett said.

The improved quality of the river adds another dimension to life at 5509 Willow Grove Court.

“Entertaining is a breeze with the open concept great room surrounded by sweeping water views,” Kramer said. “The gourmet kitchen is a show stopper with custom blue cabinets, full, high-end appliance package and quartz counters. There are also plenty of places to drift outside, with two porches overlooking the water.”

The home is served by Granby Elementary, Blair Middle, and Granby High School.
