Mother, 12-year-old hospitalized after crashing into fire truck

NORFOLK — A mother and a 12-year-old were seriously injured after they crashed into a fire truck Sunday afternoon.

Police believe the woman and child were traveling north on Hampton Boulevard around 11:45 a.m. when they crashed into a Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads Fire and Emergency fire engine that was leaving a fire station on Baker Street with its lights and sirens activated, according to the Norfolk Police Department.

The woman was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and the child was taken to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters. Of the four emergency crew who were on the fire engine, two suffered minor injuries.

Police are currently investigating the crash and have closed lanes going north and south on both Hampton Boulevard and Baker Street.

As of 5:35 p.m., the NPD tweeted that both the mother and child were out of surgery. They are both in “serious, but stable” condition.
