VDOT: Plan ahead for I-64 lane closures throughout Greater Williamsburg

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is giving drivers a heads up, plan ahead when traveling the Interstate 64 corridor the next few days.

Contractor crews with VDOT will close a series of interstate ramps on I-64 and some nearby streets that will likely cause nightly delays now until mid-November due to the I-64 widening project.

A series of interstate on-ramps and off-ramps on I-64 at Route 199 and Fort Eustis Boulevard will be closed. Alternating single-lane closures will also be in effect between Jefferson Avenue and the Colonial Parkway in both directions of the interstate.

Along with ramp and lane closures, VDOT will close some roads and some lanes on Rt. 60 in York and James City counties.

A full list of scheduled closures is below.

Lane closures:

  • Alternating single-lane closures on I-64 east and west Nov. 5-11, as early as 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., starting near Lee Hall (Exit 247) and ending near Jefferson Avenue (Exit 255). Closures on Nov. 10-11 will be as early as 11:00 p.m.
  • Alternating single-lane closures on I-64 east and west Nov. 5-9, starting as early as 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. from the Colonial Parkway to Lee Hall (Exit 247)
  • Alternating single-lane closures on Fort Eustis Boulevard underneath I-64 Nov. 6-10, starting as early as 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Single lane closures of Rt. 17 north and south between Fort Eustis Boulevard and Denbigh Boulevard on Nov. 6-10 starting as early as 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Single lane closures on Bypass Road Nov. 6-10 as early as 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Lane closures under flagger control on Jefferson Avenue and Penniman at the I-64 overpasses on Nov. 5-9, from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.
  • Single lane closures of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel in both directions on Nov. 6-9 as early as 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Road closures:

  • A full road closure of Jamestown Road at Sandy Bay Road with stoppages managed by flaggers on Nov. 6-8 starting as early as 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • A full closure of Rt. 60 (Pocahontas Trail) at Skiffes Boulevard with stoppages managed by flaggers on Nov. 6-10 starting as early as 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Ramp closures:

  • I-64 west off-ramp to Route 143 (exit 250B) on Nov. 7, 8, 10, and 11 starting as early as 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
  • I-64 west off-ramp to Fort Eustis Boulevard (exit 250A) on November 7-8 starting as early as 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
  • I-64 west on-ramp from Route 143 on November 8-9 starting as early as 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
  • I-64 west on-ramp from Fort Eustis Boulevard east on November 9-10 starting as early as 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
  • I-64 west off-ramp to Route 143 (exit 243B) on Nov. 5-9 as early as 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • I-64 east on- and off-ramps to Route 199 west (exit 242A) on Nov. 5-9 as early as 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Signs will be in place to alert motorists to the ramp closures and detours.
