A 15-year-old Newport News boy died Thursday afternoon after accidentally shooting himself in the head in James City County, according to police.

James City County Police believe the boy was “playing” with a handgun when he unintentionally shot himself, Deputy Chief Steve Rubino said.

Officers responded to a townhome in the 1700 block of Skiffes Creek Circle at 1:27 p.m., Rubino said.

The resident of the townhome, another boy who is related to the victim, called police to report a gunshot victim, Rubino said.

Police arrived to find a 15-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound to the head, Rubino said.

The boy was taken to Riverside Doctor’s Hospital in Williamsburg where he was pronounced dead.

Police are still investigating where the handgun came from, Rubino said.

Whether charges will be pressed against anyone depends on the results of the investigation, he added.
