NORFOLK — Does your dog or cat need a rabies vaccination? Norfolk’s Department of Public Health will be offering the shots for $5 on Saturday.
Rabies is a viral disease that infects an animal’s central nervous system and ultimately leads to death. It can be transmitted to people and other animals via a bite, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
It’s illegal for Virginia residents to decline to get their dogs and cats vaccinated by the time they are 4 months old, according to Virginia law.
Norfolk’s DPH clinic will take place between 1 and 3 p.m. in the parking lot of the city’s health center, located at 830 Southampton Ave. The cash-only clinic will charge $5 per animal getting vaccinated, and will only accept cats and dogs that are at least three months old, according to a city news release.
Don’t forget: Cats must be in carriers, dogs must be on leashes and those wishing to get their pet the three-year vaccine must provide proof of a previous rabies certificate. Without proof, the animal will be administered the one-year vaccine.
