Attention leaf peepers, it’s that season again. Fall foliage is about to be in full swing and that means the rakes are coming out.

For residents of James City County, these are the precise rules of the road when it comes to getting rid of leaves this season, according to a county news release:

Self Haul

James City County residents may drop off leaves free of charge Nov. 6-19 and Jan. 2-21 at the Jolly Pond Convenience Center, 1204 Jolly Pond Road. The Convenience
Center is open daily from 7 a.m.-5 p.m.

Leaves will only be accepted in clear bags no larger than lawn or leaf-size (40 gallons or less). Leaves from commercial lawn service companies will be accepted by Convenience Center staff with a letter from the resident containing the resident’s name, address and telephone number.

At all other times, leaves may be self-hauled to the Jolly Pond Convenience Center for a fee. Four lawn and leaf-sized bags will cost one payment coupon ($4). Payment coupons are available online or from James City County Recreation Center, Abram Frink Jr. Community Center, Freedom Park, Satellite Services or the Treasurer’s Office.

Credit and debit cards are also accepted at the Convenience Center with an additional 2.95% convenience fee ($4.12). Brush and tree limbs are not included in the free collection and will require coupons.

Curbside Collection

James City County will provide one round of curbside leaf collection. Collection dates are as follows and are determined by voting district. District information can be found online or by calling General Services at 757-259-4080.

Berkeley/Roberts: Dec. 1-6
Jamestown/South Powhatan: Dec. 6-13
Stonehouse/North Powhatan: Dec. 13-15

Leaves must be in clear bags no larger than lawn or leaf-size (40 gallons or less). Bagged leaves must be left curbside by 8 a.m. on the first day of collection in each district. Each street will be collected one time only. Bulky materials such as brush and tree limbs cannot be accepted.

Leaf Burning

Burning of leaves is not permitted in James City County, except in certain areas zoned A-1.

General Agriculture

Bagged leaves will be available, free of charge, for personal composting only. For more information, contact Solid Waste at 757-565-0971 or [email protected].

For York County residents…

The curbside leaf collection program generally runs from mid-November through January, but the county is aiming to start by Nov. 6 this year, according to Waste Services Manager Laurie Halperin. For a full schedule, check here.

Bags

York County participates in a regional debagging operation at the Virginia Peninsula Public Service Authority compost facility. As a general rule, bags should be no thicker than 1 ml, and should not have drawstrings. Bags should weigh 40 pounds or less and contain only leaves.

Collection

Bags must be at the front roadside by 7 a.m. on the Monday of the scheduled collection week for each address. Pickup will be completed by the end of the week. To report a missed leaf collection pickup or have additional requests, contact Waste Management at 757-890-3780.

Residents who live on publicly maintained streets can place an unlimited number of clear bags of leaves out for collection every other week. Residents who live in private communities or on privately maintained streets or roads may also bring leaves out to the closest public roadway for collection.

The collection schedule is subject to change due to the volume of leaves. To see the most up-to-date schedule, click here.

For residents of Williamsburg…

The City of Williamsburg provides free curbside collection of leaves to its residents, according to the city website. There will be five collections for each route during November, December and the first week of January.

Leaves must be raked to the edge of the street by 7 a.m. on the first day of the collection weeks, which are listed on the city’s website.

Residents who miss the leaf collection days can leave a maximum of 10 bags of leaves at the curbside on their regular garbage collection days.
