A 24-year-old woman has been charged with making a false police report after she allegedly told police someone stole her dog out of her car.
Crystal Gonzalez, of Hampton, called Williamsburg Police around 2:20 p.m. Saturday to report her young pit bull missing, according to Williamsburg Police Department spokesman Maj. Greg Riley.
Police spoke with her on the phone, then met her at the Outback Steakhouse on Richmond Road to get more information. Gonzalez said the dog was taken from her vehicle while she was parked at the steakhouse, police said.
Through the investigation, police tracked down the location of the dog and the person caring for it, who said Gonzalez had “some housing problems” and needed to give the dog away, Riley said.
Gonzalez eventually confirmed she had given the dog away about a month earlier. She called police because she was trying to get it back, Riley said.
Making a false report to police is a class 1 misdemeanor, which is punishable by up to one year in jail and up to $2,500 in fines.
Riley said the warrant charging Gonzalez had not been served as of 10:30 a.m. Monday.
There are no scheduled court hearings for Gonzalez as of 2:00 p.m. Monday.
