A 50-year-old woman died Monday morning after she was hit by a sport-utility vehicle while walking on Richmond Road in James City County, according to police.

A 2010 Ford Explorer was driving east in the 9200 block of Richmond Road when the vehicle drifted off the side of the road, striking James City County resident Sheila Cowles as she was walking, James City County Police spokeswoman Stephanie Williams said.

Police and medics responded to the scene around 11:25 a.m., and Cowles was pronounced dead at the scene, Williams said.

Officers were still on scene as of 3:30 p.m. Monday. Richmond Road is open in both directions.

The driver of the Explorer has not been charged, although the investigation is still active, Williams said.
