NORFOLK— More than two weeks after the Virginia Zoo welcomed a newborn giraffe to its family the park is looking to name her with the help of the community.
The zoo, along with visitors, welcomed the 149-pound female Masai giraffe calf into the world on June 4 and have begun taking online submissions for names. Residents can submit their ideas until June 23.
After the names are submitted, zoo keepers will vote on the ideas and announce their final choice on June 28.
According to zoo officials, both the baby and her mother, Imara, have been kept within the zoo’s Okavango Delta exhibit since the birth, but will soon be moved to an outdoor exhibit with the zoo’s other Masai giraffes.
