Every election has its small surprises, for Williamsburg General Registrar Win Sowder it’s the nearly 200 absentee ballots that have come into her office for Tuesday’s party primaries.
“It’s a little heavier than usual,” Sowder said. “A lot of students voted before they left.”

“This is a great opportunity to have a say in what choices you want on the ballot this November,” York County General Registrar Walt Latham said.
Virginia’s open primaries allow registered voters to walk into their election precinct and request either a Democratic or a Republican ballot for the primary. Any voter can vote in the primary, because Virginia doesn’t have party registrations.
James City County General Registrar Dianna Moorman said she wants every voter to know “there are two different ballots and two different ballot choices,” Moorman said.
Moorman said folks who want to beat the lines should arrive after 11:00 a.m., as that’s when “the lines have shown to historically decrease significantly.”
Below is what will appear on each ballot:
The Democratic ballot will give voters the opportunity to choose between the following candidates:
Democratic candidates for Governor of Virginia
