Virginia First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe visited two York County elementary schools Friday morning to learn about school division initiatives and accomplishments.

The first stop was Tabb Elementary School, where McAuliffe met with students as they enjoyed meals through the York County School Division’s “Breakfast in the Classroom” initiative.

The program is part of the state’s No Kid Hungry campaign. Increasing participation in school breakfast programs is one of the McAuliffes’ priorities, according to the campaign’s website.

McAuliffe then attended a celebration at Bethel Manor Elementary School recognizing the school’s designation as one of two Virginia National Title I Distinguished Schools.

According to the Virginia Department of Education, Bethel Manor was selected because of “its success in narrowing achievement gaps in reading and mathematics over two consecutive years, while increasing the achievement of all student subgroups.”
