John McGlennon will retain the Roberts seat on the James City County Board of Supervisors, successfully stifling a challenge from WJCC School Board member Heather Cordasco, according to unofficial election results.
Vote totals from the Virginia Department of Elections show that McGlennon, a Democrat, leads the ballot count with 1,963 votes, or 50.49 percent, as of 9:45 p.m. Cordasco has earned 1,921 votes, or 49.41 percent, which leaves her 42 votes shy of McGlennon’s total.
Tuesday’s election included wins for newcomer Sue Sadler (Stonehouse) and school board member Ruth Larson (Berkeley) in supervisor races.
All election results are considered unofficial until a formal results review, which begins Wednesday, is completed and all provisional ballots are counted.
McGlennon celebrated his victory at Corner Pocket in New Town with several Democrats and Independents.
“I’m very pleased that the voters have decided to give me another four years of service to the county. I’m looking forward to working with the new members of the board,” McGlennon said.
McGlennon is no stranger to winning a narrow victory to maintain his seat. In 2011, he won by 28 votes.
“[The tight results are] a significant improvement over my margins four years ago, so I’m delighted to return,” he said. When you ask voters to accept a 7-cent tax increase, you know it’s going to be a tough contest. In the end, I think voters recognize it was the right thing to do.”
McGlennon has served on the Board of Supervisors since 1998, first representing the Jamestown District and later Roberts after redistricting. In an interview with WYDaily, McGlennon said he would seek to maintain the quality of life and unique character of the county while following a strategic fiscal policy if he were elected to another term.
He edged out Cordasco in campaign fundraising, earning $36,538 as of Oct. 22, compared to Cordasco’s $35,953, as reported by the Virginia Public Access Project.
