Work on the shoulder lanes along Interstate 64 will continue this week, closing one lane in each direction each night through Thursday.
Virginia Department of Transportation crews will be paving both the eastbound and westbound shoulder lanes between Fort Eustis Boulevard (exit 250) and Jefferson Avenue (exit 255).
The lane closures, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night, began Monday and end Friday morning. Construction work is dependent upon weather conditions.
One travel lane will remain open at all times, according to a VDOT news release.
The I-64 widening project broke ground in mid-September, and weeknight lane closures have been scheduled for each week since. Daytime lane closures have not yet been scheduled in an effort to minimize the inconvenience to drivers, the release states.
The first phase of the widening project – projected to cost about $122 million – will add one lane and one shoulder in each direction for the 5.6 miles between Jefferson Avenue in Newport News and Route 143 in York County (exit 247).
The first phase slated for completion in December 2017.
The entire I-64 widening, which will happen in three phases, will stretch to the second Route 199 interchange in York County (exit 234).
