A Scotland Street sandwich shop has closed its doors.

Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches, located at 747 Scotland St. near the College of William & Mary, ceased operations Jan. 1.

The franchise opened in January 2014, and was operated by Mike Morris, Kevin Morris and Steve and Deloris Chaplin.

Mike Morris, a managing partner of Colonial JJ LLC, which operated the Scotland Street location, said the franchise was unable to sustain enough business to remain open.

The partnership continues to operate a franchise in New Town, along with locations in Virginia Beach and Hampton.

Mike Morris said he had no plans to pursue another franchise in Williamsburg at this time, and was focusing on expanding to the Newport News market.

He added a location near the Williamsburg Premium Outlets in James City County could be a potential site for the future if the partnership again pursued expansion in the Williamsburg area.

Known for their “freaky fast” delivery of sandwiches, Jimmy John’s was launched from a garage in 1983 in Charleston, Ill. The company currently operates more than 2,000 franchises nationwide, including 49 in Virginia.
