Roberts Furniture has taken over the site of the former House Key antique store as plans for a larger Aero Colours auto body and repair shop down the street are in the works.
Roberts Furniture moved into the building at 7628 George Washington Memorial Highway (Route 17) in York County at the beginning of November. This is Roberts Furniture’s fifth location, with other locations in Newport News, City of Williamsburg, Hampton and Winchester.
The new York County location will consist of a show room and will operate as the company’s primary distribution center, said Jay Roberts, one of the owners.
Roberts said he chose the location in part for its size — the store is 45,000 square feet and is the biggest of Roberts Furniture’s five locations.
“We thought the location was excellent opportunity to provide both a nice showroom and warehouse,” he said. He and his staff have been renovating since they completed the purchase agreement Nov. 3, redoing the floors, putting a fresh coat of paint on the walls and installing new signs.

The store will most closely resemble the Williamsburg store on Richmond Road but will offer a wider variety of merchandise. He plans to carry brands such as Ashley Furniture, Liberty Furniture Industries, Hillsdale Furniture and Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Company.
Roberts plans to host a grand opening in January.
A few feet away, Aero Colours plans to build a 16,800 square-foot auto body and repair shop on 9.3 acres of undeveloped land.
The shop is currently leasing space and operating in Victory Industrial Park. Paul Garman, a real estate representative for the company, said owners Dana and Michael Barefoot were looking for a larger space.
The York County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a special-use permit for the new auto body shop at its Nov. 18 meeting.
Aero Colours offers collision repair services and 24-hour towing, according to its website.
