Man Reports $700 Missing from Safe

A James City County man reported $700 was missing from a safe in his house.

He told police he had opened the safe in his bedroom Oct. 18 in the afternoon to retrieve cash and discovered it was gone, according to a report with the James City County Police Department.

The man said he checked the safe earlier that day and verified the amount, but found the spare key to the safe had been moved to a different location than he normally keeps it.

Stephanie Williams with the James City County Police Department said there were no signs of forced entry into the house.

The investigation is ongoing.

YPSO: West Point Woman Overdoses, Charged with Possession of Narcotics

A 29-year-old woman is accused of possessing narcotics after allegedly overdosing in a vehicle, the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office said.

West Point resident Melinda Britt was found unconscious in a black Nissan around 5 p.m. Oct. 17 in the 6300 block of Richmond Road, Deputy Mike Russell said.

Medics were already on the scene and tending to her when deputies arrived. Russell said there was no indication anyone else was in the car with her.

She was transported to a local hospital for an apparent overdose and later released, Russell said.

The prescription narcotics belonged to someone else, Russell said. He could not say how much of the drugs she had taken or how long she was unconscious.

A warrant for possession of a schedule I or II controlled substance was served by James City County Police on Tuesday.
